Earth Day

Earth Day Celebration

The Sixth Annual Earth Day Celebration will be held Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Ewing Park in Ellwood City, PA.  The event is held to teach about the environment and how one person really can make a  difference.  It is primarily educational in focus and includes activities for adults and children.  Bring the family and enjoy live music, and free food and gifts.  Hopefully, you will take home at least one idea that helps you appreciate and care for the environment.

Displays range from birds, reptiles and butterflies to local foods, pottery making, recycling and much more.  A climbing wall and horse drawn trolley rides add to the fun!

 History of Earth Day

Earth Day was first presented by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin in 1970.  He was committed to a safer environment, and organized a grassroots demonstration to raise awareness about what was happening to our planet.

On the first Earth Day, more than 20 million Americans came together to show their concern for the environment.  This incredible show of  support led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Act, the passage of the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act.

April 22, 2010 will mark the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.  Since its inception, Earth Day has become a global phenomenon;  more than 180 nations now hold annual celebrations.  More than 200 million people around the world participate in activities such as tree plantings and organized clean-ups.

Please help continue the efforts started more than three decades ago by joining together with your community to make the Earth a cleaner, safer place.  Simple things you can every day are:

 · Reducing the amount of garbage you make—recycle!

· Save energy by turning off lights, TV, computers and radios when not in use.

· Walk or ride a bike when traveling short distances.

· Buy products with the least amount of packaging.

· Never litter.

· Take a quick shower instead of a bath.
